The Cartist

"Creatives should always have a sharp pencil. It signifies the beginning of an idea, the first steps of a new creative venture, and in some cases, the finishing touches for another"

Hi there!  My name is Clive Botha, also known as "The Cartist", and it is an absolute pleasure to meet you!  I am an automotive artist, designer and artrepreneur based in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa.

My love for cars must be as old as I am, because I don’t recall when it started. Cars have had a strong presence in my life ever since I can remember.  Drawing as a young boy, I drew a lot of inspiration from cars as I grew up in the motor city of South Africa.

My passion for art led me to study graphic design at the Nelson Mandela University, after which I sidelined my love for art and worked in the automotive media and communications field for over a decade.  However, over the past few years I rediscovered my passion for motoring art, dusted off my sketch pad and pencils and reimmersed myself into my passion.  I went on to create "The Cartist" - an automotive art and design agency, and I've since done work for large corporate brands, as well as for clients around the globe.

Attention to Detail

I mainly work in graphic markers and pencils, however, I do not focus on one particular style or medium.  I often incorporate pastel, gouache and airbrushing in my artwork which ranges from quick sketches to highly finished renderings.  I would describe myself as a perfectionist and I am extremely technical and detail-oriented.  I precisely reproduce every line and shape of the car on the paper, so I can fill the car with colours, highlights and shadows. The complex shapes of cars create some very interesting reflections and shadows, which is what I enjoy when I’m drawing a car.  With every stroke, the drawing starts to look more realistic and comes to life on the page.

As an automotive art and design agency my goals are simple:  Passion, Perfection, Precision, Proficient and Professional.  I create unique drawings and designs.  Everything from the pencils and paper I use, to the packaging the artwork is shipped in, is authentic, original and of the highest quality.  Old-school techniques are combined with modern materials, to make sure that every artwork that leaves my agency is a beautiful masterpiece.

Passion for Performance

Over the years, I have had the privilege to travel to leading automotive manufacturing countries such as the USA, Germany, Italy, France and England, which further fuelled my passion for cars and for motoring.  I have had the opportunity to visit numerous motoring showrooms, motoring museums and racetracks, where I test drove some of the world’s most iconic supercars, such as Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren and Corvette, to name a few.

Back in 2011, I completed an Advanced Driving Skills course with Yokohama Driving Dynamics at Gerotek Vehicle Testing facility and have since test driven vehicles for various brands.

In 2016, I was accepted as a full member of the prestigious British Guild of Motoring Artists. This is a great honour and I am extremely proud to represent my country on this distinguished platform.

Today, I am an automotive artist and designer specialising in classic and contemporary sports and performance cars for clients worldwide.

The Guild of Motoring Artists

The Guild of Motoring Artists (GMA) is a prestigious worldwide group of artists, designers and engineers who share a common interest in automotive art and whose work shows a strong commitment to motoring subjects.

The GMA first started in 1986 and, over the years, has attracted some of the best automotive artists through its worldwide membership, including members from North and South America, Australasia and across Europe.  In order to maintain a high standard, admission to the Guild is subject to a rigorous selection process.  The membership is currently just over 60 artists.
